These events are thrilling to watch because of the modern Olympics’ creativity with different sports and because of the winter Olympics’ exhilarating and exhausting sports. First, The Modern Olympics are very creative using various different sports. There were nine sports at the beginning of the modern Olympics including track and field, fencing, swimming, and more. But now there is a wide variety sports. The first modern Olympic games started April 6, 1896 in Athens, Greece. It was a good idea to start the Olympics when and where they did because they were trying to bring world peace to the World during a time of great tension and mistrust. In fact, the games were suspended twice for World Wars I and II. The modern Olympics were reinstated to reflect the idea that amateur sports could bring different nations and cultures together. The founder of the modern Olympics was Baron Pierre de Coubertin who believed that the games would promote world peace. Thirteen nations competed in the 1896 Olympics and sent 311 athletes to compete. This was a good sign because it showed countries coming together. Awards were given to winning athletes but the medals were silver instead of gold, because at the time gold was too expensive. Originally, the medals were a way for the players to bring something home to show their countrymen that they had won (Fischer PG9). Winter sports were not included until 1924. One reason for this was that it was too hot to have them in Athens, Greece (Macy PG16). The modern day Olympics have evolved to carry many more sports that the ancient Olympics and this also provides more opportunities to bring more countries together. Second, the Winter Olympics are thrilling because of the many exciting sports. I find hockey to be the most interesting. The idea of the winter Olympics was to add more sports that are played in the cold so that would add more cold weather countries (Macy PG19). This would help bring more countries to world peace. In Hockey Canada and Russia always seem to be the teams to beat (Harris PG26). Occasionally smaller teams can upset these hockey powers. Canada holds the most records for Hockey and it is usually dominated by the Canadians (Macy PG16). This is mainly because of their cold climate so they can play year round. Early in the Winter Olympics, European countries had little chance against the U.S. and Canada (Macy PG16). Once in the 1920’s the U.S. shutout the Swiss team 29 to zero. But as the years have gone by the rest of the world has been gaining on the Hockey power houses of Canada, U.S. and Russia. More recently the U.S. usually gets silver or bronze in hockey just coming up short (Harris PG26), almost always finishing behind the Russians or Canadians in 2nd or 3rd place (bronze or silver). Hockey is my favorite winter sport just for its pure challenge and excitement; often the matches are long and competitive with fun rivalry. The great Winter Olympic rivals are usually Russia, Canada, or the U.S.A. and I really enjoy it when these teams match up. In conclusion, these events are exciting to watch because of the modern Olympics ingenuity with different sports and because of the Winter Olympics’ challenging games. The Olympics are particularly fun for me because they show the fun of competition all around the world.
